Our Story

We are Jasmine & Joey - the faces of Huddleston Hog & Highland Homestead.

On our small farm, we raise the Heritage Breeds of Kunekune Pigs and Highland Cows for breeding and meat, and Mixed Breed Chickens for eggs. We also enjoy making homemade pickles, candles, and sweet treats!

We honor all of our animals and take pride in raising them ethically, holistically, and compassionately through their entire lives - from farrow to fork. We do this with love and the help of a good relationship with our empathetic veterinarian and humane USDA processor. We are blessed to have our veterinarian within 5 minutes of our farm and our USDA processor within 15 minutes of our farm, so our animals are not stressed when any trips arise. We are especially honored to have a great relationship with our USDA processor, EcoFriendly Foods, where our animals are treated with respect and the differences in their meats from being Heritage Breeds are understood and valued. We researched and tried a lot of USDA processors before finding one that had goals in line with our own.

We are over-thinkers - everything on our farm, every animal, every building, every season is carefully calculated, cared, and prepared for in a regenerative and sustainable manor. From the layout of our pastures and shelters for the weather, to our breeding schedules, to our feed. We pasture and woodland raise all of our animals, practicing rotational grazing and silvopasturing, but also understand that for their best overall health, some nutrients cannot be obtained on pasture and forage alone... We did a lot of research and searching before we found the best quality feed for our animals - We use EMCO (Exchange Milling Feed Company) where we get a locally-sourced, freshly-milled, all-natural, preservative-, hormone-, steroid-, chemical-, dye- and antibiotic-free feed for all our animals. And we even worked with EMCO’s staff to custom formulate our Kunekune Feed for optimal health of our Heritage hogs.

______

I (Jasmine) grew up on a small farm, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and after years of schooling and other things, was finally able to get back to my roots, my therapy, and in 2019 started the farm in Huddleston, Virginia.

But I didn't just dive in, I did a lot of research before deciding on Kunekune Pigs and Highland Cows - I wanted animals that were excellent meat quality, easy on the land, and docile to work with

Farming was a struggle on my own plus working a fulltime job... But in 2023, I met the love of my life, Joey, and he has been the most amazing partner in life and farming I could ever ask for! Joey also grew up on a farm, but in Huddleston, Virginia, and is a carpenter and a welder (I know, I’m lucky!) and he now helps with everything from making new barns, stalls, and animal chutes to caring for animals while I am busy with my "day job" (Yes, as a small farmer I still need to work a fulltime job to support the farm!). We make an amazing team in life and farming.

Although we both have disabilities, I have Asperger’s, and Joey has Rheumatoid Arthritis, the animals are therapeutic for us, and we’ve found the best medicine is a healthy & clean, all-natural, farm-raised diet - which is where our Farm Slogan (“Where Farming is Therapy, and Food is Medicine”) comes from and I’ve also coined the term “Asperculture,” for agriculture with people with autism. My goal is to continue to promote the  benefits of animals and agriculture with people with autism. Learn more about my story on how and why I started our farm HERE.

Although we both grew up on farms, we are always trying to learn how to better our holistic homesteading practices and raise our animals more sustainably. We are currently completing our EKPA (Empire Kunekune Pig Association) Mentorship Program to become certified as a Kunekune Pork Production Farm.

We take pride is raising quality, registered livestock. Over the years, we have gained a lot of knowledge and would like to acknowledge being members of the EKPA, AKKPS (American Kunekune Pig Society) and HHCA (Heartland Highland Cattle Association).

We also want to acknowledge and thank our good friends and mentors at Fortune Meadows Kunekune Farm, Cloven Hill Family FarmTM Farmsteading, and Catlett Creek Acres - who have helped us along our way. And we especially want to thank our parents who brought us up well in farming - a special thanks specifically goes to both our fathers, both now deceased, who ingrained in us a special love of the land, appreciation of nature, and respect for animals.

We love sharing our love of farming with others, helping our local homesteaders out, and answering all questions our customers have. If you have any questions about farming, raising Kunekunes, Highlands, or chickens, or anything else homesteading - send us a message!
